Delen Close
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (September, 2000)
Author: George Crosby
Average review score:

'Delen Close' , Souls Colliding in Time
Spanning fifty years and three generations, Crosby's carefully crafted tale portrays criminal greed and ambition, arrogance and deception. The Nazi desire for power collides with their later preference for obscurity. In this novel of international intrigue, Crosby portrays the Nazi character quest for wealth on a very personal level, rare in modern novels of World War II. He draws a clear and startling epic of individual wealth achieved through the suffering of millions, its curse eventually turning upon corporate leaders worldwide.

Portraying this personal drama in venues and corporate settings familiar to all, Crosby draws disturbing but plausible connections to elements we recognize instantly from the headlines, ... corporate kidnappings, ... 'random' murders, and domestic terrorism. The author creates clear and convincing connections, which will haunt the reader as credible, and convincing.

"Delen Close" is an intricate and absorbing yarn in a context that will stay with the reader. I felt, at times, that I might take notes to help me unravel the intricacies of the plot, and to understand the twists in time which are to be, I suspect, hallmarks of this author's style.

An engaging first novel by this author, "Delen Close" is a tantalizing story of tainted wealth, its malignant effect on those who acquired it, and the corrupting effect on all who touch it. His military, corporate, and international experience combine in this author's work to give the reader a glimpse at places and times most will never know.

Delen Close a Captivating Read
After the first few pages one get "hooked" with this book and it is difficult to put down for very long. The writer must have brought many of his own experiences abroad and in the world of finance to the table in order to be able to describe places, systems and the hearts of greedy men with such accuracy in a fast paced story. The characters come alive to the extent you feel you have met such people before. A thick and twisty plot presented with great skill. Let's hear more from this author...and soon!

A Twisted Path To Nazis Plunder
Here is a book that mirrors the the real world intrigue of Nazis plunder, the dirty secrets of Swiss banking and the greed of all those cought up with the race to claim the gold hidden away in the a bank vault of Europe for the past 50 years.

This is a well written story which carefully and clearly develops the inner character of each involved and the greed and promises never kept. Its a page turner that you really will not want or dare to set down for fear of missing the next twist of events unfolding before you. Always a fan of Ludlum, I marvel at the skill of this author to equally be able to bring a story to life so that the reader is living each exciting moment as it unfolds.

By the way, finally an author has given us a detailed list of each character in the book so that we can clearly check their role and relationship.

The Funfun Club
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press/iUniverse.com (July, 2001)
Author: George Crosby

The Funfun Club
Author Crosby has produced another great read, one that is very different from his first book Delen Close but, nevertheless a great story that keeps you turning page after page as the characters come alive. The manner in which characters are introduced and their lives woven together throughout the book shows considerable thought in developing a captivating plot. If you were not Irish when you started the book, by the time you finished you either wished that you were or could at least be closer to people who are so like characters in the book.

The Funfun Club May Keep You Awake At Night
If being totally absorbed in a complex plot is your idea of fun reading, George Crosby's latest crime novel is definitely for you. After the introduction of protagonist Detective Bill Reardon in his previous book," Delen Close", Crosby has developed and "fleshed-out" the character in a very positive way. You feel an emotional connection to Reardon and you begin to cheer on his pursuit of the bad guys. Crosby's villains are so thoroughly villainous you have not a shred of sympathy for them and that's half of the pleasure of reading this kind of book.
The choice of "The Funfun Club" as a title is inspired. The juxtaposition of what could be a name for an all- girl rock band and a grisly story line adds to the reader's interest. George Crosby should develop a good fan base as he moves Detective Reardon though further adventures.

Funfun Club and unintentioned consequences
Well, George Crosby has done it again. Here is a great mystery story with twists and turns that keep you on the hook to the very end. Who would have thought that the fun we indulged ourselves in as youth could have such fatal consequences for us as adults.

Crosby does a terrific job of developing the characters without burying you in a mountain of unnecessary detail. Be forewarned, your not going to be able to put the book down once you start.

A Book for Young Dog Lovers Everywhere
This book is written in short, simple sentences, using high-frequency vocabulary that's sure to make young readers successful. It tells about a dog who wants to play and the little boy who wants that dog to go away. This little dog will win the affection of very young dog lovers and little boys everywhere with his antics and determination!

Playful Pup Persuasively Pounces
A boy who is afraid of dogs meets a friendly long-haired barking fellow looking to play. He tells him to go away, but the dog insists on being friends. The dog instantly loves the boy, but the boy isn't so sure.

Your child will learn how dogs are fun to play with, and how some things aren't quite as scary as they might first appear.

The colorful, warm drawings have endured through the years, and will help bring a smile to your face.

I fully recommend "Go Away, Dog."

Anthony Trendl

My "most favorite book"
I have the original version (1963) and mine has the following inscription written by my mother:

"This was a library book I checked out for Lisa when she was 4 and 1/2 years old. She loved it so much she kept putting off taking it back and one day 'could never find it again'. Later, she told me she hid it and by then I had paid the library for it. Her most favorite book then and for a long time."

I cherish my copy of Go Away Dog and am buying the new version for good friend's baby shower.

Thunder and Roses: The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon (Complete Stories/Theodore Sturgeon, Vol 4.)
Published in Hardcover by North Atlantic Books (October, 1997)
Authors: Theodore Sturgeon, Paul Williams, and David Crosby
Average review score:

Genius in ascent
The first two volumes in this series are fascinating looks at Sturgeon's development, well worth reading for those who are already fans of his. The third is where Sturgeon really starts to hit his stride, though, and this fourth volume is the first that I can wholeheartedly recommend to those previously unfamiliar with his work. Not every story here is superb; some are a bit dull, and some are overlong and predictable. But there's enough excellent material here to make it a solid introduction to Sturgeon's work, and the fascinating end-notes on each story by Paul Williams will make you wonder why other authors' complete-works collections can't be as thoroughly researched or as interestingly annotated. "Maturity," the first story here, is a masterpiece in the old sense of the word: it marks Sturgeon's transition from journeyman to master, while prefiguring _Flowers for Algernon_ (and predating it by a good 20 years). Other high points of this collection include the non-fantastical "A Way Home," the horror story "The Professor's Teddy Bear," the hilarious "Tiny and the Monster," and "Thunder and Roses," which is still relevant after 55 years.

Brilliant!
Four volumes in and no clunkers yet, this guy had something special . . . and his Hugo and Nebula winning short story is still about thirty years away. Wow. If you've been following along all this time let me just say that this volume will give you more pleasures than any writer had any right to give you, most writers have a couple truly amazing short stories within them and while not everything Sturgeon wrote was genius the sheer amount of good stuff here is simply astounding. "Thunder and Roses" has to be one of the most humane stories ever written and others like "There is No Defense" or "The Professor and the Teddy Bear" (if it doesn't scare you, you must not have a pulse) stand up remarkably well. Again, you owe it to get every volume of this series and save it for the generations to come, we have so few literate writers these days and those few that we have deserve to be remembered and enjoyed. Sturgeon is one. Read him.

Yet another alltime GREAT
This guy knew how to write about love, in all of it's phases, yet never or rarely descended into mawkishness. And a lot of his considerable output is classic. Buy it if you have to skip lunch for a week. If you've never read Sturgeon before, you're in for a treat, language of a grace and power to rival Bradbury and a way of moving along jauntily that compares with Henry Kuttner (Lewis Padgett) and Alfred Bester.

Emergency Care and Transportation of Sick and Injured
Published in Paperback by Amer Academy of Orthopaedic (15 January, 1995)
Authors: James D. Heckman, Lynn Crosby, David Lewallen, and Aaos
Average review score:

Good reference for the EMT
This text is traditionally seen in the classroom, however not all EMT classes utilize this text and some technicians may not be familiar with it. In essence, the text is designed to provide the necessary knowledge to become an Emergency Medical Technician.

Content includes basic physiology, medical terminology, patient assessment, and emergency interventions on the basic life support level. The book assumes no prior medical knowledge on the part of the reader and the information is presented in a clear and logical manner.

The text is also useful to the layman who would appredciate a more in depth approach to the recognition of medical emergencies and life saving interventions.

Excellent Reference Manual
This is really a reference textbook for the education of new EMT's, but the information it contains is complete, concise and extremely up-to-date (important in a field that is changing ALL the time!)

Highly recommended as a text to have on your EMS shelf.

Great Book for the future of EMTs
I am an EMT Basic student and use this book very much. It is a very easily read book with a good amount of emphasis on the practical applications neccesary for emergency care. It is also divided for ease of refernce, which is neccessary for quick checks of how to do something.

Quality Is Free
Published in Audio Cassette by McGraw Hill/Tdm Audio (October, 1988)
Author: Philip B. Crosby
Average review score:

A very practical and insightful book
This book contains excellent material, which shows what way to look if you want to increase your productivity/profitability. The whole approach is very customer-oriented, which makes it possible to avoid distinguishing between manufacturing and service businesses (and thus getting lost in irrelevant details). The concept of quality the way that Crosby presents it is fairly universal to all types of businesses. This lets one see to the bottom of the quality issue, which is essential for true understanding.

I found very useful the idea that quality should be observed in all business activities, not only customer-specific (e.g. hiring, bookkeeping, etc. vs programming). If this is neglected then the firm simply does not know the true cost of quality. Seems to be so obvious, but ask yourself if you really think of it this way. Also very useful is the suggested way to measure quality in dollars, instead of indirect measurements, like defects-per-KLOC and such. After all, everything boils down to money, and that's the only real indicator of performance.

The weak point of this book is its language: it is a little bit hard to read, especially if English is not native to you. It would be much better if it were written in decent English, instead of US spoken.

Another pitfall is a somewhat free use of terminology. Thanks to this, many authors argue that the book message is not (entirely) correct, but the point is that some of its statements should not be taken literally. One needs to grasp the true meaning, which Crosby attaches to some of his words, like "requirements".

I rate that book with 4 stars only because of readability, which could be better. The contents deserves full 5 stars, and I consider it a must-read for all managers.

Quality is not a gift, but it is free.
The author has figured out that it is traditionally difficult to have a meaningful, real-life, factual discussion on sex, quality and other complicated subjects until some basic erroneous assumptions are examined and altered.

"The first erroneous assumption is that quality means goodness, or luxury, so shininess, or weight. We must define quality as conformance to requirements if we are to manage it. The second erroneous assumption is that quality is an intangible and therefore not measurable. In fact, quality is precisely measurable by the oldest and most respected of measurements - cold hard cash", says the author. For example, "It is much less expensive to prevent errors than to rework, scrap or service them".

This book does not only have theoretic approach, but also brings practical value. It offers a quality improvement program that can be installed in any service or manufacturing company.

Philip Crosby's "Quality Is Free", first published in 1979, influences the book "Business @ Speed of Thought" by Bill Gates, released twenty years afterwards. With a bright set of modern case studies, he illustrates the basic concepts presented by Philip Crosby:

- There is absolutely no reason for having errors or defects in any product or service.
- Basically, we are slow to change because we reject newness.
- Transmitting: how you come across to others should not be left to chance.
- It is much less expensive to prevent errors than to rework, scrap or service them.
- Business is ... communication that we control and utilize. The effectiveness of the business is determined by how well we do that data transmission.

In the same year when the Bill Gates's book was published, Philip Crosby exposes his own case studies entitled "Quality and Me: Lessons from an Evolving Life".

Long Time Gone: The Autobiography of David Crosby

.."Cover of the Rolling Stone..."
Now that Crosby's "2nd Family" is featured on Rolling Stone--& CSNY are back----on music concert tour-->title will be re-issued soon, just as "DeJavu' is now digitally remastered CD.

How did he do that?
I have repeatedly encouraged young readers who desire to "step into" the reality of the 70's to read this book. It should be a prerequisite for anyone seeking a career in drugs, sex, and rock n roll, or anyone who questions what they missed being born later. David Crosby is an incredible talent and an incredible survivor. This book approaches very closely doing that justice.

EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the best autobiography's I've read. Deals so well with Alcoholism, Drug addiction, etc. I was once a rock and roll musician and can attest the fact that this is the way it was in the 70's.

Children Learning about Death
This is a beautiful story of how a little girl comes to learn about death. Her best friend is accidentaly killed. She must come to understand what death means. The illustrations are captivating and lifelike. I was unable to hold back the tears on my first read through.

A realistic & tender treatment of a child's accidental death
My eight-year-old daughter is fascinated with this book; it is the only children's book (that I'm aware of, that is) in which a child dies and another child must deal with the grief that follows. Perhaps because of the unique treatment of a child's accidental death, and how another child---a good friend---copes with that death, I think this book would be an eye-opener for any children who are curious about the subject of death. This book certainly brings the lesson home for children. By the way, my daughter's teacher---a very wise person--suggested that a parent should think carefully before just making this book available to a young child. Because I think this subject is talked about in realistic ways too infrequently, I'd recommend it! I'd also suggest that a parent or adult sit with a child to read it the first time, in order to ask questions and gauge the child's response.

Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgement
Published in Paperback by William Morrow (September, 1988)
Authors: Nikki Giovanni and B. Crosby
Average review score:

REVOLUTIONARY RHETORIC
A new and dynamic poet is in town. Her words are fiery and militant. She takes no prisoners and makes you think. Are you ready to listen to this young woman? Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgement is Nikki Giovanni's first public collection of poems. In this slender volume we are caught up in the Black Revolution of the 60's. Nikki's voice is loud, clear and inspires all who will dare hear her.

You will enjoy this work of the young Nikki as she articulates the cause of Black Nationalism and the Black Arts movement. At such a young age she has so much insight but her poetry moves beyond revolutionary rhetoric. Listen to "Nikki-Rosa" as she contemplates childhood rememberances. Attune your ears to "The Great Pax Whitie" where peace is still. Allow yourself to be challenged with "The True Import of Present Dialogue"and see what you are made of.

Nikki will make you uncomfortable but will raise your consciousness. The only "flaw" of this reissue is the fact that it needs a new introduction to put it in its historical context for new readers. A first time reader would find many of her poems dated due to their ignorance of the time. The collection gives us a glimpse of an emerging young Black poet who is committed to her art and to the revolution. Enjoy this militant young voice who refuses to compromise.

Black Feeling , Black Talk, Black Judgement
I was really feeling her. She is an excellent poet. I meet her a year ago at A&T University in Greensboro NC. I love her work.

The Nikki I love
This is my favorite book of poems! It is filled with her militant black power poetry that is characterized by the era in which it was written. A must have for any Nikki fan or any poetry lover. Note: not for the sensitive reader
